Archival Information
Researchers and scholars
seeking information on Hearst Castle or the various
endeavors and enterprises of the Hearst family can
find large amounts of primary materials at institutions
throughout California and the United States.
The Bancroft Library,
University of California at Berkeley holds the papers
of Phoebe and George Hearst, William Randolph Hearst,
and William Randolph Hearst, Jr. Other related collections
include the papers of John Russell Hastings, Fremont
Older, Edmond D. Colblentz and John Francis Neylan.
The Special Collections
Department at the Kennedy Library, California Polytechnic
State University at San Luis Obispo holds the Julia

San Simeon estate, La Cuesta Encantada, as well as other
residential and commercial projects for the Hearst family.
In addition, it was once the repository for the Hearst
San Simeon State Historical Monument Archives, which
consists of 10,000 drawings and blueprints of the Castle.
These archives are now stored permanently at Hearst
San Simeon State Historical Monument.
The San Luis Obispo
Country Historical Museum holds the George Loorz papers.
Loorz was the Superintendent of Construction at San
Simeon from 1932-1941, and the company he worked for,
Stolte Inc., oversaw the work following World War II
until 1948.
For materials relating
to Marion Davies' and Hearst's involvement in the film
industry, consult the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences in Beverly Hills.
There are a number of
institutions that house Hearst newspaper-related materials.
The Special Collections Department at the University
of Southern California houses the Hearst Collection,
which consists of 1.2 million photographs and negatives
from the Herald, the Examiner and the
Herald-Examiner along with clippings from the
Examiner.
The newspaper morgue
of the Herald-Examiner can be found at the Los
Angeles Central Library. The repository of the New
