Friends Sponsors Tours for Youth Groups
As part of its commitment to education—and the role Hearst Castle
can play in the lives of at-risk youth—FHC sponsored two groups for
inspirational afternoons at the museum. The Cuesta College Summer
Bridge Program is for high school students from San Luis Obispo County.
Students attend classes, participate in collegiate workshops, and perform
work on campus. Matt Aydelott, its program director, said, “The trip to
the Castle dovetailed with our goals perfectly.” The students had a
wonderful time learning about Mr. Hearst’s “Enchanted Hill.” Student
Stephanie Barba said, “I learned that every little detail of our
dreams could result in something grand and beautiful if we are
patient enough.”
The Young/Sanchez Youth Foundation’s Dream Big Program, based in
Visalia, CA, brought members of the Visalia Boys & Girls Club,
ranging in age from 11 to 18, to enjoy Building the Dream, the
Experience Tour, lunch and a trip to W. R. Hearst Memorial State
Beach. The foundation was established by former NFL stars Michael
Young and Lupe Sanchez, who both grew up i n the Central Valley
community. FHC embraced their vision of the Dream Big program,
and hopes to make it a continuing part of its outreach efforts.
Each student wrote an essay entitled Building the Dream, outlining
their plans, hopes and dreams for the future. During lunch, the
students were treated to Michael and Lupe’s inspiring speeches.
Afterwards, there were lots of autographs and pictures with the
kids wearing Super Bowl rings! Michael, who is also a member of
FHC’s board of directors, cited the stories of both George and
his son, William, as examples of what can be accomplished if you
believe in yourself. Michael stirred their imaginations when he
told them, “If you don’t believe you can dream big, you’re
fooling yourself, and if you don’t dream big, you’re cheating
yourself.”
