These bedding
plants can be seen in the 4 Italian cypress beds
located adjacent to the Neptune Pool. They are also
planted inside of the parterres that are between
the Casa del Sol and Casa del Monte. Additional
plantings can be seen throughout the Castle gardens.
Snapdragons
are bushy perennials treated as annuals. These
bloom in winter through spring in mild winter
climates. Heights range from 6 inches to 3
feet tall, depending on the type. Flowers
have 5 lobes that create jaws; opening when
pinched. Many colors are available.
Snapdragons were noted by the ancient
Greeks as Antirrhinon, nose-like. The French
called them gueule de loup or wolfs
mouth. In German and Italian, antirrhinum
means lions mouth.
Set out plants in early fall in mild winter
areas and spring in colder climates. Deadhead
to prolong bloom. Great for cut flowers
but are susceptible to rust and mildew diseases.
