Comments
Rhododendron is a huge genus with about 800 naturally occurring species and more than 10,000 named cultivars. Some of the cultivars from the historic period (1919-1951) are: Blue Peter(1933), Sappho(1867), and Pink Pearl(1897). The genus includes Azaleas as well as what are popularly called Rhododendrons . Azaleas have flowers that usually occur singly or in small clusters, leaves that are softer and smaller than Rhodies, and they may or may not be deciduous. On the other hand, Rhododendrons have flowers in large, rounded clusters (trusses) at the end of branches, leaves that are usually larger and more leathery than Azaleas, and are always evergreen. "Rhododendron" is Greek for "rose tree."
