| Evening-Primrose Family
(Onagraceae). A family of about 20 genera
and 500 species found only in the New World.
It consists mostly of annuals and herbaceous
perennials with a few shrubs. Includes many
native wildflowers such as Willow-Herb, California
Fuchsia, Clarkia, Farewell-to-Spring, Godetia,
Suncups, Evening Primrose, and Gaura. |

| Native to Jamaica and
Guatemala to Venezuela and Ecuador. Despite
its species name "boliviana" this
particular variety "luxurians" is
not native to Bolivia. |

Plantings on north sides
of Casa Del Monte and Casa Del Mar, and scattered elsewhere
throughout the gardens.

| Shrub
with large, lance-shaped fuzzy leaves; drooping
red flowers in clusters at ends of branches,
individual flower long (2-3 inches) and narrow.
Fruit consists of clusters of purple berries
that are edible. |

| Sometimes
referred to as "Firecracker Fuchsia"
at Hearst Castle, but this is name refers
to a different kind of fuchsia. The genus
"Fuchsia " is named in honor of
Leonhart Fuchs (1501-1556), a German botanist.
The genus contains more than 100 species,
most native to tropical America. The other
Fuchsias at Hearst Castle are mostly hybrids. |
